Bad News Pat broke her wrist...a seagull did it.

Well, that's the truth and here's the story.  On July 2 we were at a boat launch on the banks of the Kasilof River fishing.  We had taken a plastic bag down to the bank with us to carry stuff.  The seagulls are all over the place, hoping to get a meal of dead fish.  So, one flew over the bag and pooped in it.  We had decided to quit fishing and I went to get the truck...didn't know about the seagull.  When I came back, there was Pat looking very unhappy.  She had discovered the seagull mess and taken the stuff to the water to wash it off.  To get there she had to climb over some rocks to get there.  She slipped and fell, breaking her wrist.

We went into town, Soldatna, to the emergency room where they x-rayed it and found that the distal end of the radius of her right wrist was broken.  There is a tab of bone that supports the thumb and forms the lump you feel below your thumb.  She broke it loose.  They splinted her wrist and arm so she couldn't move it, gave her  some pain pills, and the names of several orthopedic surgeons in Anchorage.  The standard deal is to wait 3-5 days before putting a cast on to allow the swelling to go down, so we had time to get to Anchorage.

We came back to Anchorage and saw the doctor who confirmed that there was no need for surgery and put a short cast on the wrist.  A much better deal than what we were originally told that the cast would have to be all the way to her shoulder.  She has had little pain which is really good and she has discovered that if she thumps me on the head with the cast I answer up really quickly.  We are going to install a rubber bumper on the cast!
