AtlastaMOOSE

SUBMARINE MOOSE
So we left Valdez and headed back north towards Glenallen.  There is only one way in or out.  We decided to take a side trip to the Copper River and the Kennecott copper mine.  Apparently both the company and the mine were named after the glacier that is right there, but they kept misspelling it so there are different spellings for different parts.  The road is paved until you get to Chitina, and then it is gravel for another 60 miles.  Well, we were going to park the RV in Chitina and drive the rest of the way in the truck.  As we reached three mile lake, which is just before two mile lake, which is just before one mile lake (I'm not kidding)  I saw something in the water.  I watched as we got closer, and it was a moose head.  The crazy thing was completely underwater up to it's chin!  I took these pictures from the driver's window as he walked out of the lake and we drove beside him.  ATLASTAMOOSE!  Glenn, I believe!!!!!!

Well, Chitna had no RV accommodations, no matter what the tour info said.  We parked and drove the truck down the gravel road for a few miles.  The Copper River is justifiably famous for its salmon, but it is an ugly river valley.  The river is channeled and threaded to where most of the valley floor is rock, gravel, and this fine dust that is what is left after glaciers get done with rocks.  The river stays heavily silted, but people fish it anyway.  If you are either native or an Alaskan citizen, you can fish there and use dip nets to catch fish.  That rules yours truly out on two counts.  Not many fish were being caught, though.  They are still in the ocean.
